Environmental Education –NIMA-Edu

One of the focuses of work of the Environmental Education Research Group (NIMA-Edu) is the production of written texts that tell about Sustainable Practices. These texts first appeared in 2006 in the written composition workshops conducted by the Alternative Policies for the South Cone Institute, in the Child Mankind Network project.  The Child Mankind Network is associated with the Dialogues and Documents for the Progress of the Mankind Network, originated in Paris, in the Charles Léopold Mayer Foundation for the Progress of the Man. Inspired by the "ecologies" of Félix Guattari, we define Sustainable Practices as: "initiatives dedicated to the improvement of the quality of life in/of Earth. These are initiatives (by people, groups, social movements and institutions) that look forward to build balanced relations between one and oneself (personal ecology), balanced relations with the human beings among themselves (social ecology), and the balance between the human beings and the diversity (environmental ecology)."

The texts can be done by anyone seeking to spread theoretical and practical  knowledge devoted to the improvement of life quality in the level of the "Three Ecologies". NIMA-Edu also offers within PUC the course Specialization Latu Sensu in Environmental Education for Sustainable Societies, and the extension courses "The Body in the School" and "Ecology-Art".

Living Design Investigation Laboratory - LDIL click to access LDIL

For about 20 years the Industrial Design Faculty in PUC-Rio has been developing projects with strong social impact, initially included and developed within its design disciplines. Little by little this work evolved and is now also developed in extra-curriculum disciplines. From the achieved results it was defined the research line "Object, Environment and Society" and there came to be organized the LDIL. In the LDIL,  teachers, designers, engineers, architects and trainee-students have been working in the development of useful bamboo objects. In a 400 m2 area, totally designed for group working, LDIL features an open space, without walls, which could contribute to distance teachers and students. It also  features an internal space open to the exterior, therefore being a building adapted to Rio de Janeiro's tropical climate.

Environmental Law – NIMA-Jur

This Research Group aims to contribute to the formation of Law professionals, making them able to join specific technical knowledge with an ethical and multidisciplinary view of the environmental question. Although Brazil has and is recognized by having a rather advanced environmental legislation, there is still much to be done in terms of its practical application, in order to reach an efficient protection of the valuable natural asset of the country and a more rigorous combat against pollution and its effects. NIMA-Jur also offers a course of "Specialization Latu Sensu in Brazilian Environmental Law" and the extension course "Environmental Law for Lawyers, Managers and Executives".

Sustainable University

Founded in February, 2008, the Sustainable University Research Group has as its main objective to work with the question of the sustainability of the University, by creating and executing integrated projects that, through a continuous process, turn PUC-Rio into a model university wherein the sustainability is practiced in the classroom, in the research and in the campus. The first step of the Group was the creation of 4 action lines: Water and Energy; Materials and Residues; Biodiversity and, Environmental Education. Each group has as a primary objective to perform an inventory of the use and consumption patterns within PUC-Rio as a whole and of the actions aiming to increase the conscience and mitigation of impacts that already exist within the University.

As explained by NIMA's director, Luiz Felipe Guanaes Rego, "the idea of sustainability incorporates that of stability. Stability in a systemic level implies a free energy flow, entering and exiting. The continuity, the perpetual motion, is a result of a non-stopping process of entries and leavings. In the moment that growth gets to maturity the sustainability lies not anymore in growing."

In december 18th was realeased the PUC-Rio's Environmental Agenda, a document that defines goals and objectives to consolidate the sustentability project in the Campus.
