Abstracts 

PIMAR

PIMAR is a pilot project of continuous monitoring through high resolution satellite images that pursues to identify the forest patches and urban expansion processes (both horizontal and vertical) upon the preservation areas of the State. The program is focused in the main mountain ranges within Rio de Janeiro City, namely Tijuca and Pedra Branca, wherein are located the Tijuca National Park and the North portion of the Pedra Branca Massive State Park. In addition to those mountains will also be monitored the four slums chosen to receive funds by PAC (means, Acceleration of Growth National Program) in Rio de Janeiro (Complexo do Alemão, Rocinha, Pavão-Pavãozinho and Manguinhos). The monitoring of the urban expansion in those areas will be important to subsidize the planning of governmental actions besides helping the management of the covered territory.

Environmental Education - Duque de Caxias Municipality

"Environmental Education - Formation of ethical-environmental values for a fuller exercise of citizenship in the Duque de Caxias municipality" This project seeks as its first step to perform an environmental diagnosis of the Duque de Caxias municipality. The initial results report will serve as a basis for in a second round allow for the training of teachers from the local public schools and other local leaders as multiplying agents of Environmental Education. This methodology makes possible to treat the subjects raised by the local environmental analysis, therefore stimulating the development of ethical-environmental values and increasing the awareness of the local population of the importance of taking care of the surroundings and of its relevance for the full enjoyment of citizenship.

Environmental Education - Nova Iguaçu Municipality

"Environmental Education – Formation of ethical-environmental values for a fuller exercise of citizenship in the Nova Iguaçu municipality" This project is the result of previous experiences developed by PUC-Rio in partnership with PETROBRAS and some municipalities. Some of the objectives of the project are: to provide an ample source of environmental knowledge about the Nova Iguaçu municipality, built trough the diagnosis performed by the team of PUC-Rio's Geography Department and NIMA; to invest in the formation of Environmental Education multiplying agents that will spread ethical-environmental values, in their turn capacitating and raising educational and community leaderships.

Rio Vegetable Gardens

Vegetable Gardens is a project of urban organic vegetable gardening that aims to create a network of continuous production vegetable gardens. It allows for a new use of urban free spaces: the introduction of a network of organic vegetable gardens in Rio de Janeiro City. The Vegetable Garden is to be seen as an urban equipment, specifically designed to be used in the development of sustainable urban agriculture activities. Green areas to share with other citizens, appropriate for exchanging experiences and for living together, acting as little recycling mills for organic residues.

Environmental Education for Public School Children

This project is a partnership between PUC-Rio and the public school network, and by means of the execution of Environmental Education activities in the campus of the University it looks forward to the awakening of ethical and environmental values, which are important in the development of the children's citizenship, such as: sensibility to and love for nature; preservation of biological and cultural assets; sense of responsibility towards the preservation of the environment and, sympathy with all kinds of life forms that are part of the campus environment.
