Despite its abundance in nature, only about 5 % of the total water volume is available in the form of potable water. This water is available for human consumption in the surface, in rivers and lakes, and in the subsoil, on the water table. The climate changes will worsen this situation as the rain distribution will tend to be more concentrated and will therefore favor the surface flow with little percolation to the water table.
Within this context it is fundamental that the University sympathize with the big worldly worry about the water resources, showing that it is possible to establish efficient patterns of water use and recycle, avoiding waste, making use of efficient technologies and organizing actual actions, with the participation of the educational community.
In the shortage ambient that is approaching and with the rising cost of this natural resource, techniques for filtering and reusing the water will be needed, as well as the use of alternative water sources such as the rain water capture. These techniques need to be improved by joint efforts of research and development.
According to a broader view and based on the principles of environmental ethics, solid residues, diluted in the water, must be removed and processed generating organic fertilizers and energy in the form of gas and water. The latter has to be returned to the water system, clean and pollution free.
The sustainable administration of the hydraulic resources of the campus must encompass Rio Rainha as a whole, from its springhead in the Carioca Range to its mouth in the Leblon Beach, through partnerships and associations, aiming to take on part of the responsibility in the joint management of the Rainha River basin, as established in the water law code.
Aiming to turn the use of water resources more sustainable we suggest the following general directives:
Rational and efficient management of the water resources avoiding unnecessary waste and undue usage backed by a strong monitoring system.
Use of filtration technologies aiming to the re-use of the water resources together with the creation of a hierarchical system for the use of this resource.
Use of technologies that allow for the capture, storage and use of water from precipitations taking into account the possible extreme climatic events that may result from climate changes
Use of technologies that allow for the managing of the solid residues in an efficient and sustainable way both for the University and the community of Rainha river basin.
To share responsibility in the managing and monitoring of the water quality of Rainha River, incentivating actions of environmental education, basic sewerage and garbage recycle in the communities that are located in the referred river basin.
