The sustainability imposes socioenvironmental responsibilities regarding the consumption goods that get into the University. It is necessary to have some knowledge about the production chain of the products used assessing their efficiency regarding the environmental services and impacts. The products used also have to be evaluated regarding their disposal, potential re-use and recycling.
The materials acquired for the physical works of maintenance, refurbishment and construction must not only respect items of origin and final destination, but also perform efficiently in terms of absorption, temperature emission and environmental adequacy, contributing to save energy, water, among others.
The eco-efficient management of the materials that flow across the University requires support from a network database able to suggest criteria and orientation to the different units of the University, mainly on what refers to the daily requirements from the departments and administrative sections. This would make possible to guarantee the origin, the planning and organization of the re-use and recycle of the products used in the University, in articulation with the associations that work with this last item.
In addition to the goods acquired by the University, several other consumption goods are offered daily to the students. Their control and the establishment of norms would help guarantee the socioenvironmental sustainability in the campus. From another side the students must be stimulated to take into account the sustainability parameters in their own consumption decisions.
Aiming to turn the materials usage in the campus sustainable, we suggest the following directives:
- To stimulate the conscious use of the materials acquired by the University, taking into account the product origin and evaluating its disposal within the principles of the sustainability.
- Implementation of control systems and management support systems that take into account the acquisition of sustainable materials and their disposal.
- To promote the adequacy and expansion of the premises of the campus with sustainable materials, in a way that ensures a larger integration between the constructed space and the green area, always respecting the natural drainage system of the geographic area.
- Stimulate the research of materials and technology for the adequacy of the existing constructed space in the campus and the possible expansion of the installations, in accordance with the environmental patterns more adapted to the reality of the geographic space.
- To propose academic and administrative ruling that stimulates savings in the use of paper and printing paints.
- To map out the acquisition, consumption and disposal flows of residues.
- To promote the reduction, the optimization and the environmental adequacy of what is consumed through campaigns of environmental consciousness.
- To promote the use of non-disposable mugs or glasses within the campus progressively substituting plastic glasses.
- To promote consciousness raising campaigns that might contribute to modify the current consumption pattern
- Development of a program for the recycle and re-use of computers in the campus.
- Monitoring of the data on the purchase, consumption and residue disposal flows.
- Creation of a suppliers register with environmental certificates that provide for the broader understanding of the production chain of the products used in the campus.
- To monitor the purchase/consumption data flux.
- To promote the establishment of norms and strategies for the green constructions in the campus.
- To propose academic and administrative normative actions that stimulates the conscious consumption in the University.
- Environment sustainable administration of the materials acquired by the University.
- To promote the adaptation and the expansion of the constructed space of the campus within an environmentally sustainable pattern, ensuring:
- The adequacy of the acquired materials;
- The reduction in raw materials consumption;
- The durability;
- The recycling of the materials;
- The stimulus to the utilization of local resources in theconstructions; and
- The offering of technology and excess raw materials to the surrounding poor communities.
