Environmental Analysis and Assessment

To develop multidisciplinary lines of action (in the search / trying) to develop a broader environmental analysis. To enable the student to analyze and assess the rational use of the environment, supplying the concepts and methods that will be necessary for the preparation of inventories, to provide technical assistance, to assess impact, and to handle, restore and educate for the environment, according to a view both current and critical. To allow the student to improve his capability to interact and relate transdisciplinary contents, within a holistic view of the environment.

Sustainability in the Project: from the object to the city

With an interdisciplinary approach, this course deals critically with the concept of sustainability and its relation with the foundations of the design and the practice of the design, in the scale of the objects, the constructions and of the cities, and its role in the urgent adaptation of the societies for the new global context brought by the climate changes. The course seeks to contribute for the development of the professional worried with the sustainability and the social environmental impacts of his projects, through the theoretical support and the introduction of technical and methodological tools.


Brazilian Environmental Law

To make possible the deepening of the studies, research and debate, at a post-graduation level, latu sensu (specialization course), in the several branches of Law that rule the environmental protection.

Environmental Education for Sustainable Societies

To support the development of strategies of environmental education that might contribute to overcome the anthropocentric and overconsuming culture in schools, companies, communities, universities and organizations both governmental and non-governmental. The Three Ecologies (personal, social and environmental) and the Ethics of Care are the basic reference for this course.


Extension

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Projects for the Generation of Carbon Credits

Introduction of basic concepts on climate changes:

  1. Identification of the impact caused by climate changes in various sectors of the Brazilian economy;
  2. Presentation and discussion of key issues that might contribute for the mitigation of climate changes;
  3. Identification of opportunities for the implementation of CDM projects and for other markets;
  4. To build up knowledge and skills for the preparation of carbon credit projects in the scope of the Kyoto Protocol and of other markets;
  5. To qualify professionals able to follow all the steps of the assessment, monitoring, execution and register of processes of CDM projects.

Program – Climate changes and the Kyoto Protocol:Flexible mechanisms considered by the Kyoto Protocol (emissions trade, joint implementation, clean development mechanism) and other markets;

Renewable energy projects (wind power and small hydropower plants) and energetic efficiency;
Biomass projects and residue handling;
Substitution of fossil fuels – biofuels: ethanol and biodiesel;
Solid Residue Disposal and Handling Processes Design;
Design of industrial processes; carbon capture – forests and geological capture
Coordination: Celso Romanel, PhD in Civil Engineering (University of Arizona), Professor in the Civil Engineering Department of PUC-Rio.


Environmental Law for Executives, Managers and Lawyers

To provide the participants information on the current development stage of the Brazilian Environmental Law , focusing on basic concepts set by the Brazilian Constitution, by the Brazilian Environmental Policy, by the Environmental Crimes Law, Public Civil Action Law, etc.

Environmental Economy and Management

To enable students and professionals to take part actively in the implementation of environmental management systems in the organizations and perform an efficient and precise assessment of the environmental performance of the organizations comparing them with the performance of other organizations in the same region and in other countries (environmental benchmarking).

Educating for the sustainable societies – Challenges for the Education in the 21st Century

To reflect on the environmental conditions of the planet, understand its origins and develop strategies to intervene in formal and informal education situations. - To offer theoretical and practical knowledge related to the environmental questions and on the methods to work with children and youth, seeking their motivation to take part in actions that might bring immediate changes to the current way of living and of thinking about life.


Geotechnologies Applied to the Study of Oil and Gas

To enable the student to understand the Remote Sensing technologies (satellite images and GPS devices), Geographic Information Systems (GIS, WEBGIS) and Tridimensional Visualization applied to the study of oil and gas. Solutions will be presented that include the generation and management of space borne data and software dedicated to the study of oil (exploration and production) in onshore and offshore ambient. The course includes both theoretical (slide show) and practical (practical exercises in the computer) classes.

Introduction to Geo processing using the software ArcView 9.3

To enable the student to use the ArcView 9.3 software in basic operations such as storage, edition and analysis of geographic data, as well as make him familiar with the theoretical concepts that are basic for the understanding of the geographic space, in an integrated and systemic way, using the new geoprocessing techniques.

Environmental expertise and its applications

To enable professionals from any specialty to perform the environmental expert analysis in the law and out-of-court (private arbitrage) processes. To provide theoretical and practical support for one to work as environmental expert, technical assistant or environmental advisor according to the expertise inherent to each one of those professionals.

Practice in Environmental Projects

To develop the skill of producing technical documents using different case studies. To provide the student a practical view of the environmental analyst market, both in the public and the private sectors, introducing the main existing projects (management tools) required by the current system of rules (law).


The Body in the School – Challenges for the Education in the 21st Century

To learn the historic and philosophic origins of the current school/teaching model, which values the rational processes, to the prejudice of the free movement of the body. - To contribute to the construction of new forms of understanding the place of the body in the school, offering elements for the development of the daily routine of educational institutions according to the three ecologies: personal (take care of myself), social (take care of us, of the social collective) and environmental (take care of nature, of the planet)

Remote Sensing Applied to the Environment

To enable the student to perform satellite images pre-geoprocessing and geoprocessing operations, such as: geometric distortion correction, noise elimination, filtering and contrast enhancing, supervised and non-supervised digital classification. The work will be based on the basics of Remote Sensing, Digital Image Processing and Geoprocessing.
