The Interdisciplinary Center for the Environment (NIMA) of PUC-Rio attended the Conference of the Parties on Climate Change (COP 20) in Lima, Peru. The director of NIMA, Felipe Guanaes, gave the lecture "COP 20: Perspectives from el Sur", on 9 December.

Seminar for the Discernment of the Mission of the Pan-Amazon of CPAL Project discusses joint actions of the Jesuits

Between 19th and 22th of November, members of the Jesuit Provinces Conference of Latin America (CPAL) met in Manaus, Brazil, to discuss the articulation of the Pan-Amazon Jesuit Project. The Seminar for the Discernment of the Mission of the Pan-Amazon of CPAL Project brought representatives from ten Latin countries with Jesuit presence. During the four days of discussions, the participants were able to have an overview of the set of actions developed by the Society of Jesus in the Pan-Amazon region and understand the challenges and existing needs for greater internal integration of these actions. Also discussed was the creation of external networks to the Company, and the engagement of other key players in the region for the benefit of the indigenous cause and the preservation of the environment.

Event will discuss sustainability projects among Jesuit universities in Latin America

Next Monday, November 10th, is going to be held the I Seminar of Peers of Sustainability and Environment (RHA) sponsored by the Association of Universities Entrusted to the Society of Jesus in Latin America (AUSJAL) and supported by the Interdisciplinary Center of the Environment (NIMA) from PUC-Rio. The event will take place in RDC's auditorium, on the university campus, from 9H to 17H30. Will attend faculty members from Jesuit universities throughout Latin America, which will feature regional and global sustainability projects, Amazon will be on the agenda of discussions also.

10th edition of Brazil Environmental Award celebrates private companies commited with sustainability

Yesterday (09th of october) evening, the ceremony award of the 10th edition of Brazil Environmental Award was held at the Solar da Imperatriz, in the Botanical Garden. Luiz Felipe Guanaes, director of the Interdisciplinary Center for the Environment (NIMA) from PUC-Rio, joined the judging committee of the Environmental Innovation category, that chose as winner, the project "Vale Fund and Synergy Map of Pan-Amazon" from company Vale . The event honored five other categories: air emissions; solid waste management; conservation and ecosystem management; environmental responsibility; and rational use of water resources. The winning companies were, respectively, Tractebel Energia; Sindicom; GDF SUEZ Energy Brazil Ltda; Tractebel Energia; and Schlumberger Oil Services.

Partnership between american university and PUC-Rio does workshop about sustainable actions in poor comunities

Drexel University, headquartered in Pennsylvania, in the United States, came to Rio de Janeiro to host a workshop in partnership with the Interdisciplinary Center for the Environment (NIMA) from PUC-Rio. Multidisciplinary teachers from both institutions met between 21th and 24th of September, at the Retreat House Padre Anchieta, in São Conrado. The main topic on the agenda were the opportunities and risks that poor communities offer to environment. During the meeting, teachers shared experiences and observed the similarities and differences of their projects. The group also took the opportunity to go to Dona Marta, Rocinha and Salgueiro communities.

iCampus: PUC wins your own app with NIMA's support

It was released on Wednesday, November 3rd, the iCampus app, developed by the Integrated Risk Management Center (CGIR) in partnership with the Interdisciplinary Center for the Environment (NIMA) and Synapse - Innovation Program Genesis Institute. The app, designed exclusively for PUC community, provides campus navigation, like a GPS, in addition to gives information about services offered in buildings, such as restaurants and banks. Still in beta and 2D version, the teacher responsible for CGIR, Fernando Coutinho, says the idea is to get feedback from users in this first version and then launch version 2.0 next year, as the suggested improvements and in 3D.

Supported by NIMA event shows sustainable development projects promoted by Jesuit universities in Latin America

This past Monday, 10th of november, PUC-Rio received members from the Association of Universities Entrusted in Company of Jesus in Latin America (AUSJAL) during the International Seminar of the Network of Peers on the Environment and Sustainability. The event was supported by the Interdisciplinary Center for the Environment (NIMA) of PUC-Rio and promoted the exchange of experiences between universities. During the afternoon, they exhibited their projects and the challenges of the quest for sustainability in their respective countries.

The II International Symposium Metropolization Space, Land Management and Urban-Rural Relations will be held at the Auditorium Padre Anchieta, in PUC-Rio campus, between the 3rd and 8th of November. The event will discuss the metropolization of space, the new urban values​​, the reconfiguration of cities, territorial management and the narrow urban-rural relation. The symposium was developed through the association between the Center for Studies and Research in Space and Megapolization (NEPEM), the Group of Rural and Urban Studies (urals) and the Group of Land Management in the State of Rio de Janeiro (GeTERJ), all from PUC-Rio, and also with the Center for the Study of Geography Fluminense (NEGEF), from UERJ.

Exhibition Amazon in Rio

Learn and be amazed by Amazon and it's importance to the world, in "Amazon in Rio" exhibition!

The Interdisciplinary Center for the Environment (NIMA) from PUC-Rio, in partnership with WWF, opened the exhibition "Amazon  in Rio" that brings information and curiosities about Amazon's ecosystem. On a walk through panels, the visitor is invited to reflect about the relevance of the Amazon rainforest for water, energy, food and health within and beyond the amazonian region. A movie with relevant names in environment matters and WWF environmental scholars show data, proposals, challenges and highlight how this relationship of dependence on a healthy Amazon affects Brazil, in addition to other South American countries.

The exhibition is held in NIMA Environmental Education Station at PUC-Rio's campus, in Gávea, and takes place from Tuesday to Thursday, from 11H to 14H. The exhibit is scheduled to be on display until the end of the year and is open to the public. Come and visit!

Importance of Amazon's conservation is main topic of Yolanda Kakabadse's speech

Yolanda Kakabadse, President of WWF International Council, came to PUC-Rio on Monday (08th of september), to deliver the lecture "Amazon in Rio" realized by the Interdisciplinary Center for the Environment (NIMA). The opening was made by the Rector of PUC-Rio, Priest Josaphat Carlos Siqueira SJ, followed by Luiz Felipe Guanaes, Director of NIMA, and Cláudio Maretti, leader of the Living Amazon Initiative. The three reinforced the importance of the Brazilian Amazon to the world and the need for initiatives like this that aware and encourage students, teachers and interested people to think in solutions for Amazonian problems. The lack of seats in the auditorium showed that people responded to the call.
